How to Make the Most of Your Trip to The Markets at Shrewsbury
When it comes to Amish markets in Pennsylvania, few experiences compare to The Markets at Shrewsbury. So much so, in fact, that if you’re in or near York County, we consider exploring our Amish vendors an absolute must.
That being said, how do you make the most of your trip to The Markets—especially if this is your first time and you want the best experience?
Well, to help you make the most of your trip, we’ve outlined a few of our top tips. By giving this article a quick scan, you’ll learn how to prepare for farmers’ market shopping in general, as well as a few keys to making your trip to The Markets at Shrewsbury even more special.
Why Shop at a Farmers’ Market in the First Place?
Pennsylvania is renowned as the home of some of the best Amish farmers’ markets in the country. Here’s why The Markets at Shrewsbury—and surrounding Amish markets in Pennsylvania—are some of the very best ways to do your shopping.
- Superior Freshness: Our local produce is often harvested 24 to 48 hours before sale and within a short drive of The Markets—meaning better taste, color, and texture
- Higher Nutritional Value: Local fruits and vegetables are allowed to ripen fully in the field and then sold quickly—maximizing vitamins and nutrient content compared to groceries that travel long distances
- Seasonal Variety: From seasonal fruits and veggies at Glick’s Produce to made-from-scratch Amish baked goods at Ruthie’s Bakery, The Markets has local treats for every season and holiday
- Local Relationships: One of our favorite aspects of The Markets is the personal relationships guests establish with vendors… and the greater transparency that leads to regarding products
- Better Value: While certain items may seem more expensive in comparison to big box grocery stores, the improved quality and better shelf life can provide better value for your money

When Is the Best Time to Shop at The Markets at Shrewsbury?
There’s no wrong time to visit The Markets during normal business hours (more info on our hours and holiday schedule below). In fact, your preferred shopping time will largely depend on the type of shopping experience you’d prefer.
- For the greatest variety, get to The Markets early, as farm fresh produce and local meats can move quickly
- For the full Amish marketplace experience—complete with hustle and bustle—swing by midday for a lunch from The Salad Shack, Salad Shack Sandwiches, or That Pig Place
- For greater leisure, visiting The Markets later in the day can result in a more personal connection with vendors and—sometimes—end-of-day deals

How Do You Choose the Freshest Produce?
One of the greatest benefits of shopping locally is the fresh produce. Here are two simple tips for snagging the best-tasting (and most nutritious) local fruits and veggies.
- Look for the most vibrant colors, fresh firmness, and a pleasant, ripe smell, and…
- Ask questions!
The vendors at The Markets at Shrewsbury know their crops—and are happy to point you in the best direction for a week of great eating.

And Finally… Come Hungry!
While it’s generally not recommended to be hungry at the grocery store, The Markets at Shrewsbury is a completely different story. And even if you aren’t ready for a full sit-down lunch, there’s always plenty to snack on at The Markets!
- Grab a hand-rolled pretzel from Olde Fashioned Pretzel Haus (a PA Dutch favorite!)
- Enjoy farm-fresh ice cream from Trailside Creamery (Sourced by local Amish-operated Down on the Farm Creamery)
- Stock up on sweet treats from Beiler’s Candy Shoppe
And that’s just a taste of what’s available… so be sure to browse around before making your final decision.
