Thanksgiving Essentials At Your Local Farmer’s Market

What’s your ideal scenario when shopping for Thanksgiving menu essentials? Fighting the crowds with oversized carts and undersized isles at the grocery store or browsing the friendly stands of your local farmer’s market? If you think you can’t find everything you need for Thanksgiving dinner at the farmer’s market – it’s time to think again!

Your Traditional Thanksgiving Menu is at The Markets

Buying Your Turkey:

That’s right, you’ll find the Thanksgiving Day main event at your local market! Many poultry vendors will have fresh turkeys available for the big feast.

Here are a few tips for choosing and preparing a fresh turkey for your Thanksgiving menu:

  • Factor in 1lb. of turkey (uncooked) per guest (maybe 1.5 lbs. if you want a lot of leftovers!).
  • When storing a fresh turkey, make sure your fridge is cold enough. Your fridge should be set no higher than 40 degrees.
  • If you’ve chosen a frozen turkey, allow for enough thawing time. Figure 24 hours for every 4 lbs. of meat.
  • The USDA recommends that you cook your turkey to an internal temperature of 165°F.

Where You Can Buy… A Turducken:

Want to make this year’s Thanksgiving one to remember? How about substituting your classic turkey for a Turducken?! A Turducken is a deboned chicken stuffed into a deboned duck which is then stuffed into a deboned turkey. It also includes stuffing added between the layers of meat. Want to give it a try? You can you order yours from Patch’s Poultry by November 18th!

Traditional Thanksgiving Side Dishes:

Produce is bountiful in the side dishes you feature on your Thanksgiving dinner menu. And, of course, your favorite farmer’s market is the best place to shop for locally-grown produce. You’ll find everything at Markets from green beans, Brussels sprouts, and carrots to winter squash, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Some traditional side dishes include:

  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Caramelized Brussels Sprouts
  • Garlicky Mashed Potatoes
  • Bread Stuffing

Make Your Own Cranberry Sauce:

Skip the gelatinous cranberry sauce from a jar this year and create something fresh instead. It’s the perfect time of year to purchase fresh cranberries, as they are in peak season from late fall to early winter.

Here are few things to remember when purchasing fresh cranberries:

  • A 12-oz. bag will yield about 3 cups of cranberries
  • Store fresh cranberries in the fridge in a loosely-packed plastic bag
  • Don’t rinse your cranberries prior to using them
  • Adding 1 teaspoon butter or oil will create a thin film that helps prevent them from boiling over

Delicious Pumpkin Pie:

Or, apple pie. Or, pecan pie. Or, any dessert you need to satisfy a large crowd of sweet-lovers. They can all be found, baked fresh, at The Markets.
