How to Spend The Ultimate Saturday Morning in York County, PA

Looking for something to do over the weekend? You’re in luck.

Because whether you love food, history, or nature (or some combination of all three!), York County is the place to be. Our unique part of the country is home to several rich historical sites and museums, local farmers’ markets galore, and a beautiful countryside enjoyed by both locals and visitors year-round.

So if you’re just passing through—or are a long-time Yorker—here are 6 of our top attractions in the area. Stop by one or more this weekend, and we guarantee it will be a Saturday morning well-spent.

#1 The Markets at Shrewsbury (Traditional Amish Farmers’ Market)

Saturdays: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Please don’t mind us saying so, but no trip to Pennsylvania Dutch country is complete without a visit to a traditional Amish farmers’ market.

As such, The Markets at Shrewsbury has become a favorite amongst both locals and visitors alike. Home to 18 authentic Amish merchants, you’ll find made-from-scratch baked goods (rising right before your eyes), local in-season fruits and vegetables, freshly butchered meats, vintage candies, delicious creamy ice cream (churned from the milk of local cows), novelty bulk foods, classic PA Dutch treats, and more.

And when you’ve had your fill? Check out our neighbors: Penn Dutch Furniture, Cozy Home Gifts & Décor, and Penn Dutch Structures—all of which showcase the unparalleled precision, beauty, and durability of Amish handcrafted goods.

#2 Central Market York

Saturdays: 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Nestled in the center of downtown York, Central Market York is another destination favored by Yorkers and weekenders.

Central Market York features 50+ vendors serving everything from specialty and international premade foods to farm-fresh local produce, baked goods, deli items, and handcrafted goods. The market has resided in the historic Central Market House building for over 125 years, and is a wonderful community gathering place to enjoy a morning coffee, live music, and the bustling energy of downtown York on a bright Saturday morning.

#3 York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum

Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Housed in a former factory complex, the York County Agricultural and Industrial Museum highlights developments of over 300 years in transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, and industry as they relate to our rich industrial and farming heritage.

A fantastic option for the family, many exhibits feature hands-on experiences for visitors of all ages—making the Agricultural and Industrial Museum a no-brainer for groups with small children who love to explore!

#4 York County History Center

Saturdays: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The York County History Center encompasses three museums, four historic sites, and a genealogy library and archives—all within historic York, PA.

The museum system (featuring the York County History Museum, Agricultural and Industrial Museum, Fire Museum, Colonial Complex, and the Bonham House) is a must-visit for anyone interested in American history or local genealogy.

The sites are considered a top destination for families and students, as the museums offer a combination of hands-on learning, guided walking tours, and—at the old Fire Museum—a look into the lives of early 1900s firefighters, including six vintage fire trucks (a favorite of children and adults alike).

#5 Heritage Rail Trail County Park

Saturdays: Dawn – Dusk

Looking for an easy Saturday hike on a nice day? Look no further than Heritage Rail Trail County Park.

Spanning nearly 30 miles, this well-maintained stone trail offers a scenic and historically rich outdoor experience along the former Northern Central Railway. Built by the York County Rail Trail Authority, the trail surface is accessible for hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

Aside from the natural beauty you’re immersed in along the way, the trail winds through or near seven officially designated Trail Towns—displaying a vibrant collection of York County dining, lodging, historic landmarks, and small town charm for meandering breaks along the way.

#6 Rocky Ridge County Park

Saturdays: Dawn – Dusk

Another one for the nature lovers, Rocky Ridge County Park is a protected nature reserve spanning 750 acres across some of the most beautiful parts of York County. It’s a destination not to be missed for re-grounding yourself in the mature oak forests of southeastern, PA.

All trails are well-maintained and multi-use (hiking, biking, equestrian). The park also has multiple scenic observation decks, a fitness trail, and a fenced-in “Nature Fun Zone” (playground) for children.

Additionally, from the day after Thanksgiving through December 30th, you can enjoy Christmas Magic: a walking trail surrounded by more than one million sparkling Christmas lights and displays. The light show runs in the evenings (Saturdays from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.), but we thought you’d like to know anyway.
